How to Survive the Class You Hate

By Alison Keim on April 9, 2014

The clock is inching closer to 10:00 and you know you have to go to that class you absolutely can not stand. You never thought fifty-minutes could ever possibly be so dreaded and go by so slowly, but you were wrong.

Throughout four years at college, you are likely to have at least one (and probably more) classes that you absolutely can not stand. These classes can either be extremely difficult, incredibly boring, have a professor you dislike, or just be uninteresting. If you’re lucky, your dreaded class won’t be all three of these elements. There are a few ways to bare a class you hate, and here’s how.

Work with a group

Being miserable in a class is always better when you’re not alone. If you hate your class so much it’s highly likely that you are not the only one. Find those friends who are struggling just as much as you are and work on the assignments together. You can complain, moan, and of course work together to get the work done. You will get the work done and ease the pain a little at the same time.

Participate

The word every student hates to hear, but if it will make the time go by faster, I advise it. If the class isn’t a large lecture, involve yourself in the class discussion. You may want to roll your eyes at everything the professors says, but hold back and put your hand up. You might find once you start including yourself in the conversation the time will go by faster and you will begin to feel more engaged in what is going on.

Don’t Look at the Clock

It’s so tempting to stare at the clock and wait until the time has finally come to feel free, but try and hold back as much as you can. You will notice if you avoid the clock, you will be forced to focus on the content rather than counting down the minutes until you can run out the door. Try and sit somewhere in the classroom where the clock isn’t visible so it’s not as easy to glance up so often.

Work Hard

It’s difficult to want to work your hardest at a class that you really don’t care about…but if you brace it head on and work through it, you might find yourself beginning to feel the class isn’t so bad. A lot of students don’t like the classes that they are not getting the best grades in. By studying your hardest and earning a good grade, you might find the class wasn’t as bad as you once though, or it will give you a positive angle to look at it during it.
